MineOS – Awesomely Easy Minecraft server

Just thought i would let you know about a cool OS you can get for free. It just works. Download the Live disc and boot up on any old pc you have. It installs the base Linux system and a cool front end to make it super easy via HTML to startup and edit your server at any time. You still have access to command line, ssh and ftp. I have been running a craft bukkit server at version 1.6.4 of minecraft for a few months now with no problems.

Raspberry PI – FreeCiv Server install

These instructions are for installing and running a freeciv server on the raspberry pi. It works surprisingly well.

#Install the files

  • sudo apt-get install -y freeciv-server freeciv-client-gtk

#Start the server

  • freeciv-server

#done. no really, thats it.

Star-Made – Ubuntu Server Install

Star-Made (star-made.org) is a Minecraft style game in space where you create spaceships and explore the universe. It is currently in alpha and is free to play. And like Minecraft it runs on java, so it works on most operating systems. This tut is for installing and running the server, but the single player client files are also installed so you could play it also in that mode if you wanted.

Note 1: this will not run well enough to use on a raspberry pi, at least not without a lot of tweaking. Note 2: These instructions are based off my installing on Ubuntu Server 12.04, 32b version.

#As always update/upgrade your server before hand

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade -y

#Install java

  • sudo apt-get install -y openjdk-7-jre

#Create directory to hold games files

  • cd
  • mkdir games
  • cd games

#download jar file

  • sudo wget http://files.star-made.org/StarMade-Starter.jar

#Run Jar to expand game files

  • sudo java -jar StarMade-Starter.jar -nogui

#make .sh file executable

  • cd StarMade
  • sudo chmod ug+x StarMade-dedicated-server-linux.sh

#startup server for first time to create server.cfg file

  • sudo ./StarMade-dedicated-server-linux.sh

#After first load, stop server and configure settings

  • cntrl-c
  • sudo nano server.cfg

#Get server IP and start Star-Made

  • ifconfig
  • sudo ./StarMade-dedicated-server-linux.sh

Startup the client and connect to it

#Upgrade and Update

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade -y

#Install LAMP

  • sudo apt-get install -y apache2 php5 mysql-client mysql-server tomcat6 vsftpd

#Setup MYSQL

  • mysql -u root -p
  • dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server
  • CREATE DATABASE wordpressDBname;
  • GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON wordpressDBname.* TO ‘wordpressusername’@’localhost’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘wordpresspassword‘;

#install wordpress

#Open your browser

  1. http://yourRaspberryIP/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php
  2. Fill in Database Name, User Name, and Password the same as entered above.
  3. Run the install and than browse to your new wordpress site
  4. http://yourRaspberryIP/wordpress/

Raspberry PI – Minecraft Server Build

Install Raspian “Wheezy” and run initial setup program:

  • sudo raspi-config
    1. Set memory split to 16megs to the GPU
    2. Expand File system
    3. Overclock it

#reboot

  • sudo shutdown -r now

#update/upgrade raspian

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade

#Install Java

  • sudo apt-get install -y default-jdk

#create install location

  • cd /home/pi/
  • sudo mkdir minecraft
  • cd minecraft

#download minecraft server jar

#to start the server run the following:

  • sudo java -Xms128M -Xmx256M -jar /home/pi/minecraft/minecraft_server.jar nogui

#server will take a few minutes to create the world. After its done type stop to end the server. Edit the config file to fit  your needs and then start minecraft server again. ctrl-x to save.

  • sudo nano /home/pi/minecraft/server.properties

#to start the server on boot edit the rc.local file and add the above “sudo java…” line.

  • sudo nano /etc/rc.local
