Raspberry Pi – Edimax EW-7811Un Install

This is my personal experience in getting the Edimax EW-7811Un running with my AT&T Uverse Router.

#Upgrade/Update

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade

#Shutdown and insert Edimax wifi usb

  • sudo shutdown -h -P now

#Check for usb device connections

  • lsusb

#Configure interface

  • sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

iface default inet dhcp

#Add SSID and Password

  • sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
ssid=”_SSID_”
proto=WPA2

#or WPA or whatever security your router is using
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
psk=”_PASSWORD_”
}

#If you are not sure if your device can see the network or you want to confirm the spelling/case of the ssid, use the following command to scan local wifi networks

  • sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

#Raspberry’s included drivers should work. But to upgrade to latest:

  • sudo wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80256631/install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh -O /boot/install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh
  • sudo /boot/install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh

#Do a final reboot and check for Ip address

  • ifconfig
